The FISSAC Project is an international project, co-founded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 research andinnovation programme (GA N°642154), that aims to develop and demonstrate a new paradigm built on an innovative industrial symbiosis model towards a zero waste approach in the resource intensive industries of the construction value chain.

The FISSAC project involves stakeholders at all levels of the construction and demolition value chain to develop a methodology and software platform, to facilitate information exchange that can support industrial symbiosis networks and replicate pilot schemes at local and regional levels.

FISSAC aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of the processes, services, and products at different levels

  • Manufacturing processes
  • Product validation
  • Industrial symbiosis model

The project runs from September 2015 until February 2020.
The consortium consists in 26 partners from 9 countries (8EU Members States + Turkey)

Why a platform?

FISSAC Industrial Symbiosis Management Software Tool (FISSAC ICT Platform) is able to support decision making in material flow analyses and industrial clustering. The fundamental aim of the ICT Platform developed under FISSAC project is to demonstrate and maximize environmental, social and financial benefits of IS networks to support circular economy structure. Furthermore, the FISSAC ICT Platform should facilitate formation and operation of IS networks by following the FISSAC IS Methodology.

What the Platform can do?

Identify Industrial Symbiosis opportunity and provide information for their instauration

Put in contact facilities with an Industrial symbiosis potential

Provide a list of solution provider, to support facilities in this process

Design IS Networks

Perform feasibility assessment

Assess the networks performances from the environmental, economic and social point of view

Who can use the Platform?

Symbiosis Expert

I want to support facilities in searching, evaluating, establishing IS opportunities, exploiting my experience and expertise in industrial symbiosis.

Facility User

I want to search, evaluate, establish IS opportunities for my facility.

I want to obtain an overview and collect specific information related to the Industrial Symbiosis experiences in Europe.

The major elements contained in raw materials used in cement industry could be basically sorted as: CaO, SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3. The presence of these oxides in the wastes allows them to be easily used as raw materials, substitution or mineral additives in cement production process.

The responsible use of natural resources and the environmental sustainability in ceramic processing are differential aspect that must take an increasing relevance in architecture nowadays.

Some WPC have an almost 100% recycled composition and products made from WPC are capable of being fully recycled at the end of their working lives, and be formed onto the same or different products.

The cement and concrete sectors play a critical role in implementing industrial symbiosis applications. In an environment where raw material resources are beginning to decrease every day, sustainable economic development cannot be achieved without protecting environmental resources.

Glass that can’t be used to make new glass can still be recycled to replace virgin raw material in other building materials, with economic and environmental benefits.
